National Alliance of Vendors

With the establishment of the Provisional Coordinating Committee, one can say that a significant milestone has been accomplished for the creation of the National Alliance of street vendors, informal market vendors and hawkers in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC).

The seminar organised in Kinshasa in the DRC capital, which was held at the Rehabilitation Center for the Physically Disabled from 22nd to 24th of August 2013, brought together three national trade union centres (UNTC - CSC - CFDT), the national union of vendors of Congo (SNVC) and two affiliates of StreetNet in Congo (LDFC - ASSOVACO).

Update on Tripartite Meeting of Experts on Facilitating Transitions from the Informal Economy to the Formal Economy

A tripartite meeting of experts on the facilitation of the transition from the informal to the formal economy is taking place this week in preparations for the meeting (2014) of the International Labour Conference, with a view to making a recommendation. In this regard, the President of StreetNet International, Oscar Silva together with representatives from WIEGO and SEWA, are working hard to discuss with representatives of governments, employers and workers, the social inclusion and employment of workers in the informal economy through transition from informality to formality.

Inhabitants of Kiev (Ukraine) witness another barbaric demolition of working places of entrepreneurs

During the raid a small cafe and several shopping pavilions have been destroyed at the metro station "Lesnaya." Working entrepreneurs showed their permits. However, some of them reported that from recently the city authorities refused to renew the permit documents for the land use. Behind these actions of the authorities, the entrepreneurs see the order of influential owners of large trading businesses. Some of whom - are people with "doubtful" past who have managed to become Members of Kyiv City Council, and have an influence on the decision to place the trading outlets around the city.

StreetNet International

StreetNet International is an alliance of street vendors. It was launched in Durban, South Africa, in November 2002.

Membership-based organizations (unions, co-operatives or associations) directly organizing street vendors, market vendors and/or hawkers among their members, are entitled to affiliate to StreetNet International.

The aim of StreetNet is to promote the exchange of information and ideas on critical issues facing street vendors, market vendors and hawkers (i.e. mobile vendors) and on practical organizing and advocacy strategies
