“The City We Want” Campaign launched in South Africa

StreetNet affiliate, Ubumbano Traders’ Alliance, together with members of SASEWA (South African Self-Employed Women’s Association), representatives of minibus-taxi drivers, conductors and washers, and Abahlali base Mjondolo shack dwellers’ organisation, launched “The City we Want” Campaign in Durban, on Wednesday, 9 March 2016.

They were supported by Executive Committee members of SAITA (South African Informal Traders’ Alliance) who came from all 9 provinces of South Africa to attend this launch event.  Rosheda Muller, Acting President of SAITA, undertook to ensure that “the City we Want” Campaign is initiated in the other 8 provinces.

This is part of the international “The City We Need” campaign launched by UN HABITAT in preparation for HABITAT III which will be held in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016.

In South Africa the organisations participating in this campaign will be expecting candidates standing for election in the Local Government elections in August 2016 to pay attention to their demands, if they want workers in the informal economy and shack dwellers to vote for them in the elections.
