19 – 21 July 2010
The World Class Cities for All Campaign was officially passed onto the Coordination of Social Movements (CMS) and the CUT Brazil during the handover ceremony on July 20th in Port Elizabeth, in the presence of the Executive Mayor of Port Elizabeth, Zanoxolo Wayile. Pat Horn,on behalf of StreetNet International and Namvula Hadi, on behalf of COSATU, presented a handover certificate to Antonio, Lisboa do Vale, Executive Director of CUT Brazil, representing the WCCA Brazil campaign.
Accepting the challenges and responsibilities of the campaign, Antonio explained that the lessons and experiences of the South African street vendors organisations and partners will be very valuable and will guide the Brazilians as they formulate their strategies and build alliances.
“The CUT is concerned that FIFA demands are very wide-reaching. We want to ensure that public resources, in particular the funds from the workers’ employment guarantee fund, will be used to provide lasting benefits to the Brazilian working class, in public transport, health services, the environment, tourism, and the textile industry,” Lisboa stated. “One of the questions that the WCCA campaign has raised is the extent to which FIFA becomes a parallel state with powers over and above those of the host cities. Our campaign aim must be to ensure that the rights of the people are maintained,” he concluded.
The Mayor of Port Elizabeth presented the CUT Brazil with a beaded vuvuzela and football shoe in the South African colours. WCCA South African street vendors organisations from the 7 provinces present at the meeting and the campaign partners were all given a copy of the handover certificate.
