Update on Street vendor evictions in Botshabelo

Around late June informal traders around the Batshabelo area in Manguang were forcefully evicted by the Mangaung metro municipality. Shacks and also good were destroyed during the evictions. There was an uprising and according to Thabiso Pita from the South African Informal Traders Alliance, that at least two people reported dead during the uprising and three hundred and thirty six people were arrested. A series of meetings and consultation between the Mangaung Metro Municipality and the hawkers were held to discuss street trade by-laws and a way forward.

“The current situation is that the street traders are back to their normal activities. There is a commission in place to re -allocate the Hawkers. The Mangaung Metro Municipality was given three months to finalise the installation of new stalls for Hawkers,” said Thabiso.
