"Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity… If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is infinitely superior to man… If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women…" Mahatma Ghandi
StreetNet International President, Oscar Silva, greets women of the organisation and all working women in the world on their day, March 8th.
The International Working Women’s Day or International Women’s Day commemorates the struggle of women for their participation, on equal terms with men, in society and in their full development as persons.
In 1977 in the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the International Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.
International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries. The growing international women’s movement, bolstered by the United Nations through four global women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated efforts on behalf of women’s rights and participation in political and economic life. International Women’s Day is becoming an opportunity to reflect on progress, demand change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women’s rights.
As you can see woman are inextricably linked to peace, a peace that every day is won and remains a guiding force for StreetNet. I have the honour to chair and lead so in the near future our women will exercise their legitimate rights and responsibilities.
Sincerely
OSCAR SILVA.
